Going with the usual theme, we found the place online. On arrival, the outside of the hotel was really attractive. The restaurant area itself was very quiet, although it was busier in the bar area.
After being seated we had to wait quite a while for anyone to come over to us to see if we were ready to order. We had already visited the bar, so we didn’t have to wait for drinks, but it was a surprise to have to wait so long considering the restaurant was virtually empty.
The waitress who finally came over to take our order wasn’t very cheerful. I wasn’t overly impressed with the experience at this stage. The restaurant seemed short staffed even though it wasn’t busy as we only saw the waitress and a little while later someone else who seemed to be the manager, but when he took over he made a much better impression – in fact, when we had a problem with our bill he couldn’t have been more helpful and we left feeling really happy with the experience.
The choice of roast meat was either lamb or beef; I went for the lamb. We had a reasonable wait for the food; we also had a steak as part of the order and we could see the food was freshly prepared so we didn’t mind waiting! When the food came out, it looked very attractive. The lamb was stacked on top of the potatoes, which still managed to retain their crispness and tasted really good – homemade. The lamb was a generous portion and good quality, and though there was fat running through the middle it didn’t spoil it. There was a generous portion of vegetables on my plate and I was pleased with the great selection – crisp green beans, mange tout, roasted carrots, roasted squash and roasted parsnips, all of which were cooked to perfection. The gravy was good too, though not enough!! Despite the lack of gravy this was a really good meal and greatly recommended (and if you don’t fancy a roast, the steak looked fantastic)!
To draw this review to its conclusion, the food was good quality and very much enjoyed. Though the service initially wasn’t great it did improve and surpassed some other places, which makes me think that the service is generally good. So, for those reasons this is another place I would recommend.
