Cost for Sunday Lunch: £7.45

The Grove used to be known as Finnegan’s Wake, and was recently refurbished to a very high standard. Previously, it was quite expansive but it hadn’t been looked after very well. Now though, it’s a place to go with friends and family alike. There are a number of little places to relax, they have work well in make the decor very kitsch – extremely stylish in this reviewer’s opinion!

We are not here just to talk about decoration and times of old, so on to the review!

They are very friendly in The Grove, the bar staff greet you as soon as you walk through the door which is nice and welcoming. Claire and I settled into a chair and perused the menu. They have a lot of choice for food and also an extensive wine list (this could be because they advertise themselves to be a “drinking and dining room”).

I wandered over to the bar to order our food, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Claire went for the roast beef, I chose the turkey. The Grove quite often has an offer on with regards wine, this time it was buy two large glasses of any red wine, get the rest of the bottle free. So, a £15 bottle of wine costs £10 – great for Sunday lunch!

Someone came straight over and laid out the knives, forks and condiments, as well as asking Claire if she would like horseradish. We do not get this kind of service in a good restaurant, let alone a pub.

The food came out after a couple of minutes, and what an abundance of meat! The turkey was moist, beef flavoursome and both seemed freshly carved. The potatoes were quite small, but had a fluffy texture and we even had mash! Unfortunately the vegetables whilst we were served carrots, cabbage and parsnips, the portion was quite small and were not the best tasting – the parsnips seemed undercooked / al-dente! Also, the Yorkshire pudding was cold and may not have been home-made. I was served stuffing though! Lastly, lashings of gravy made up for the misdemeanours with the veg and Yorkshire pudding. the lunch was very flavoursome, and both Claire and I had empty plates in just a couple of minutes :-)

Overall, fantastic service, good value roast and a great venue. For £7.95 in London, you can’t go wrong.
