We were going to go to The Bull Hotel in Gerarrds Cross a few months ago, but instead went somewhere else. As we were at a loose end, and I had heard some good things about it, we decided to visit for an impromptu Sunday lunch.

Reservations

I called up that Sunday morning and reserved a table for Claire, JW (our 16 month old son) and me. They started service at 12:30.

Venue

There was quite a large car park off the main road, so easy to get a space. The entrance to the restaurant was through the hotel, past the bar and courtyard. We were met at the door and shown to our table at the back. A high chair had already been set up for JW, which was clean and in good repair.

The tables were laid out, with linen napkins. Every Sunday, they have live jazz, and today was no exception. They really added to the ambience, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them whilst eating.

Drinks

I ordered a pint of lager, Claire’s asked for a glass of wine. We were brought a jug of water with ice for the table (regularly replaced throughout the meal).

Starters

The Bull Hotel operate a set priced menu on Sunday’s, as this was a carvery we decided to go straight for main. They did take a short while to set up, we were brought bread to nibble on until they were ready.

Sunday lunch

As mentioned previously, the main meal was a carvery (serve yourself, apart from the meat). Claire asked for roast pork, I went for the roast lamb with some crackling on the side.  JW had salmon.

With regards the vegetable selection, I went for: roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, mange touts, carrots, peas and swede. This was topped off with a large Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Perhaps now you can see why we didn’t choose a starter? :-)

The lamb was good, cooked medium to well, Claire liked the roast pork. The crackling was very good – extremely crispy and without the thick layer of fat underneath. Roast potatoes were close to perfect, and vegetables were cooked exactly to my liking (al dente). For the first time since reviewing, a carvery has performed as good as a restaurant served Sunday lunch!!!

Desserts

A good selection of puddings were available: fruit selection, strawberry or chocolate gateaux, chocolate and cream cake or apple tart.  As this was a “help your self”, I had the chocolate and cream cake along with the chocolate gateaux and a slice of melon (because I could!).  Claire brought back a slither of chocolate and cream cake with a larger piece of strawberry gateaux.  The waiter asked if JW wanted some ice cream (not something they had on the self service).  As JW doesn’t eat dairy, we asked if they could do some sorbet perhaps instead?  He brought out some blackberry sorbet for him – a really nice touch.

The desserts were nice enough – I wouldn’t have wanted to pay more than £4 for them, but a good finish to the meal.

Children’s facilities

As mentioned previously, the (very clean) high chair was already set up for us.  The waiter was extremely friendly with JW, and made sure he had everything he needed (such as sorbet / ice cream instead of the selection on offer).  The baby changing facilities were clean and tidy.  Overall, we have never been somewhere I have felt more welcome with JW than here.

Conclusion

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience of The Bull Hotel in Gerrards Cross.  I liked the live jazz, giving the restaurant a lively atmosphere.  The venue was nice, the Sunday carvery was very good and the service impeccable.  They were especially welcoming with JW, helping us to relax and enjoy the meal.  It was also very reasonably priced (JW’s meal was FREE!).

So, with all this in mind, how can I not give a Top Rated award to The Bull Hotel!  Excellent for families with young children and large get-togethers.

John
